The long version
Letter from a volunteer
By Matt Thurecht
On the 18th of September I first arrived to Nawaratna Primary School. I met principal Surendra and head teacher Sarbin. At first appearance they seemed honest and loving men. And for once in my life I must say, that my first impression was the correct one.
These men and the entire teaching staff of Nawaratna Primary School treated me with great respect. My time at this school will never be forgotten.
For those of you who have never taught before and don’t know how you would cope, well, this was my first time teaching and it’s not my chosen career. I just wanted to challenge myself, and escape the monotony of everyday life at home.
I can promise you, no two days will ever be the same, nor will there be a dull moment. If you’re not teaching you’re planning lessons, eating momo [dumplings] with the teachers, or playing with the kids. And nothing beats going into Kathmandu city for your weekend.
I must say though, that like all my travelling experiences, its not with out its frustrating moments. Thimi is a real Nepali city with real nepali problems, water pollution, rubbish and a general lack of adequate infrustructure. But it is real Nepal, with real Nepali hospitality which is like nothing I have experienced before.
I have been overwhelmed by the number of students who have invited me into their homes for dinner and given me presents, cards, and drawings.
This has been a colourful and loving moment in my life, and I strongly recommend this experience to anyone who is willing to make the effort.
MATT THURECHT
P.s. Big thanks to Jo-hanna, Jeff, Ayman and Gino for all your help.
